repost from frednotamused.com

Those strangely odd people that stay up late on a weeknight just to see a band they don’t even know

You ever read one of those invites on Facebook, about a local band playing some gig at some smelly ole’ venue on a weeknight? You know what I’m talking about; the show that starts at 10pm and wraps up sometime around 12:30am! The only guy left in the room other than the bands is the bartender who is almost apologetic for kicking you out so he can get home. Hey! I’m not calling out the bartender here! In fact, I applaud his efforts day in and day out. If you ever want to know what is the best live music in town, you can always go to one of these wonderful people for a frank discussion about what’s hot and what’s not.

My point is that most musicians will find themselves playing a show on a weeknight. If they are lucky, they will be playing for a few more people each time until they become a regular weekend band. Until then, they will be cutting their teeth on Tuesdays. Live local music is about as apple pie as it gets.

Those strangely odd people that stay up late on a weeknight just to see a band they don’t even know are the true heroes of this scenario. These are the peeps that come out, spend a few bucks, and listen to a variety of sounds. Some sounds they like, some sounds they don’t like. Then they get home at some unspeakable hour, of course they can’t sleet right away, so they stay up even later. The next morning, they don’t even know their own name because they are so tired. Some people consider this experience to the worst ever. That’s a perfectly reasonable reaction. Then there’s the people, who wake up just as tired but these people somehow feel better or it. These are the hard core music listeners. They can’t get enough of the thrill of hearing a band for the first time.

If this sounds like you, then you are the one I’m talking about. It’s not for everyone! Here’s to you weeknight warrior. This coming Tuesday (March 22nd), my band will be playing at the Comet Tavern with Chyeah Chyeah, Grand Atlantic from Brisbane Australia, Dirty Sidewalks and my band the Fred Roth Revue (ana-them). It’s a big show on a Tuesday night. Maybe we’ll see one person there or maybe we’ll see 100. No matter what, we will still be playing! If you are who I think you are, you won’t care who else is there. Just so long as you are!

Come up and see me, Fred Roth (a dreaded fellow) at the show. Tell me what you think about live local music and I will tell your story to the world. Until then, I will simply say thanks! See you Tuesday night.

The Fred Roth Revue celebrates the hero’s of live music. The listener, the patron, the fan that comes to the show on a week night and stays till the end. We think it’s time you get a reward for having our back.

This Wednesday night, the Fred Roth Revue will be playing at the Rendezvous (2nd Ave between Battery and Bell in Belltown) with The River Rust and Reed Turner. It’s a late show, but as a fan of original music, you don’t care about that. We would like to thank you by making you an Ana Them Records VIP. If you come to this show, and mention this blog, you will be entitled to a free CD from the upcoming Fred Roth Revue CD Fred Not Amused, A free beverage at the show (water, tea or whatever) and a mention in our next newsletter about how YOU support US. So come on out and see this show this Wednesday night?

The Fred Roth Revue is one of the band on Ana Them Records. This is a band that gets to play live shows on week nights. Weekends are few and far between. Their motto is Week Night, So What!!! The members of this band is Fred Roth (aka Cedric Ross), Scott Griggs, and Merch DeGrasse and Jim Knodle. These musicians work their day jobs and perform at night. They love to play music and they put a lot of time in each performance.

The Fred Roth Revue will play at 11pm on Wednesday March 2nd at the Rendezvous. Remember when Seattle used to come out to see bands on weeknights at all hours of the night? Peeps would show up to work the next day exhausted but pumped up from a night well spent. That was the Seattle I remember. These days, a band would be lucky to have a friend show up at 7pm for sound check on a week night.

Are those days gone? Naw, those days will return. In the meantime, bands must do what they can to encourage their “fans” to come see them play on a week night. So what about you?

Come see the Fred Roth Revue at the Rendezvous play with the River Rust (ll:40 ish), Fred Roth Revue (11 ish) and Reed Turner (10 ish). Stay up late, laugh a lot and get a kiss from the bands. If you are out of state, spend money to fly in just to see the bands.

…no, really!

Campfire OK is making a little fire for themselves in the news lately.

Ana Them Records recording artists Campfire OK has been in the news as of late with their debut release of Strange Like We Are. The album was released on February 1st. Less than two weeks later, the band is graced to become NPR’s song of the day.

This indie folk band has worked very hard in a short period of time. They delivery great Seattle music and they’re just getting started. I’ve known Mychal Goodweather for several years, but it was a conversation I had with him that would eventually tie our (Ana Them Records and Campfire OK) together.

It's a Campfire...OK?!

It was about a year and a half ago when I spoke to Mychal Goodweather about my aspirations of signing a new band. Mychal listened to my vision of the future with great interest. After I was done with the conversation, he looked at me and said “I have a band.” The rest as they say, is history.
